Coastguardsman Anchors His USNCC Certificate

U.S. Coast Guard Chief Storekeeper Peter Dvorsky set out to sharpen his data analytics skills at the United States Naval Community College (USNCC). According to Chief Dvorsky, his goal was simple: to get better at his job.

“I wanted to expand my knowledge in data analytics so I could improve how I prepare data call reports for my unit. When I looked at USNCC, what stood out was that it offered a clear path to earning a certificate without the immediate commitment to a full degree. The asynchronous format sealed the deal. It let me balance coursework with my active-duty responsibilities without missing a beat.”

This wasn’t Chief Dvorsky’s first pursuit of higher education. In 2005, he earned a degree in finance and accounting and has picked up several classes and certifications since. He reflected, “what meant the most, honestly, wasn't the credential, it was having my kids there to see it. Showing them firsthand that the key to success is lifelong learning meant more than the certificate itself.”

Chief Dvorsky received some in-house United States Coast Guard training in Microsoft Excel which laid the foundation in data processing fundamentals and made a big difference once USNCC coursework got underway.

“The most impactful thing I learned was how to understand core data structures and validation rules. It let me dig into the relationships between data recorded across the multiple systems the Coast Guard uses. Once I could spot discrepancies and out-of-the-norm patterns, my reports got noticeably more accurate, especially for those short-notice data calls that don't leave much room for error.”

To his fellow service members, his advice would be to “start small.” He noted that a “certificate program is a great way to break into a new field without committing to a multi-year degree right away. Hitting that milestone faster helps build confidence for whatever comes next.”

Thinking ahead of his eventual transition back to civilian life, Chief Dvorsky’s plan is to keep going, either through earning another certificate or a degree, and to build well-rounded expertise across data analytics, contracting, and financial management.

“To everyone on the USNCC staff,” he said, “thank you, your institution provides outstanding opportunities for enlisted members to achieve their educational goals while serving in [the] military.”
