Master Homeowner Educational Series Comes to Livingston County this Fall
GENESEO, N.Y., Sept. 11, 2026 — Livingston County is launching a new series of home and property care workshops that will offer a hands-on learning experience taught by trained professionals in various areas of homeowner concern. The seven-part Master Homeowner Educational Series builds knowledge, confidence and abilities for all homeowners regardless of previous experience, while teaching DIY skills and concepts that can save residents from costly deterioration caused by neglect.
The classes will be Tuesday evenings from September 15 to November 3, 2026, with sessions in Basic Home Maintenance, Legal and Insurance Issues, Home Fire Prevention and Safety, Home and Neighborhood Safety, Home Energy Efficiency, Basic Household Plumbing, and Home Electrical Basics. Classes provide a combination of theory and practical learning so participants have the chance to practice what they have learned.
Livingston County Senior Planner Christie Mahany coordinates the program which was originally designed by Habitat for Humanity as a way to help familiarize first-time homeowners with maintenance and upkeep that could save thousands in repair costs over time.
“There are plenty of resources to help someone become a homeowner, but once you have the keys, that’s it,” said Mahany. “There are so many things that aren’t taught anymore, and you might not know where to ask for help when something happens.”
The course has evolved to address the ever-changing home management topics for new and seasoned homeowners alike, making it relevant for anyone who wants to understand how their home works. The series offers a safe, guided environment for participants to get hands-on experience with tools and hardware or to discuss scenarios like boundary disputes and keeping property secure.
Mahany is bringing this series to Livingston County after encountering a substantial number of residents uncomfortable servicing their own home or unsure where to turn when help is needed. It could be that they are taking over the responsibility from someone else or that the components and repair process have changed since the last time they encountered that maintenance area. In any case, the series fosters a general level of knowledge through interactive group learning and live application.
“We want to empower homeowners so it’s not intimidating and they aren’t afraid of working on their own home and protecting their investment,” said Mahany.
Mahany said the sessions give homeowners the confidence to work on their own homes and the knowledge to know when it is best to consult an expert.
“It’s also about knowing when it’s wise to hire a professional, feeling comfortable vetting, knowing what questions to ask, and understanding what you’re being told,” she explained.
The class meets in the Building 1 Conference Center, 1 Murray Hill Drive in Mount Morris, N.Y. Residents can register at https://tinyurl.com/2026mhp. Individual session cost $20 or residents can enroll in the entire series for $100.
