New elementary school strengthens Luke AFB, local community connection
Troy Gilbert Elementary School is named in honor of U.S. Air Force Maj. Troy L. Gilbert, a former F-16 Fighting Falcon pilot previously assigned to Luke AFB's 309th Fighter Squadron. The school will serve kindergarten through eighth grade andprovide educational opportunities for familiesliving near the installation.
Gilbert was killed during combat operations in Iraq in 2006. In 2016, his remains were recovered and returned to the United States. His legacyremainsconnected to Luke AFBthrough the Maj. Troy L. Gilbert Memorial Bridge, which bears his name and connects the east and west sides of the installation.
“Seeing it named in honor of Maj. Troy Gilbert is deeply moving and ensures his legacy of service lives on,” said Col. Nicholas Ihde, 56th Fighter Wing commander. “This dedication is a testament to the unbreakable bond between Luke Air Force Base and our surrounding community. Team Luke appreciates these superb relationships that strengthen our resolve in producing the world’s greatest fighter pilots and combat ready Airmen. The students walking these halls today are the future of our nation and I have no doubt there are future Airmen and aviators among them.”
Naming the school in Gilbert's honor extends the connection he has with Luke AFB into the surrounding community,presentingan opportunity for young students to learn more about the U.S. Air Force and the values represented by the school's namesake.
“I think the school helps bridge the gap between the military and civilian communities,” saidLt. Col. Branden Delong, 56th Civil Engineer Squadroncommander. “By honoring Luke Air Force Base pilot Maj. Troy Gilbert, it keeps his legacy of service and sacrifice alive and gives students and families a personal connection to the base and its mission.”
The school held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Aug. 28, marking the opening ofthenewly constructed building for the 2026-2027 school year.
ForLuke AFB personnel, that connection extends beyond the installation's gates. Schools,familiesand local organizations contribute to a support network that helps Airmen remain focused on the mission while providing their families with stability and opportunities within the communities they call home.
“I envision the school building a strong partnership with Luke Air Force Base through opportunities that bring students, families and Airmen together in meaningful ways,” said DeLong. “By creating these shared experiences, the school can honor Troy Gilbert’s legacy while strengthening the relationship between the school, Luke AFB and the broader community.”
The school's proximity to Luke AFBprovides an additional education option for service members and their families. Having educational resources close to the base can providegreater convenience and stability for military families while also helping Airmen balance the responsibilities of military readiness and family life.
Luke AFB service members rely on that community support as a criticalcomponentof readiness. Developing and sustaining a warrior mindset requires more than preparing Airmen for the physical and operational demands of the mission. Resilient families, strong communityrelationshipsand reliable support systems are critical foundations that allow Airmen to remain focused,disciplinedand prepared to meet mission requirements.

As Luke AFB continues its mission to train the world's greatest F-35A Lightning IIfighter pilots and combat-ready Airmen, relationships with surrounding communitiesremainan important part of sustaining readiness. Local schools and civic partners help provide the stability and support military families need while creating opportunities for Airmen and their families to build lasting connections outside the installation.
The opening of Troy Gilbert Elementary School brings together education, community support and Luke AFB’s heritage while strengthening the families and local stakeholders who support the installation's Airmen and mission.
