Rose-Hulman Faculty Receive NSF Grant to Advance National Engineering Education Transformation Efforts

Rose-Hulman professors Eva Andrijcic, PhD, and Sriram Mohan, PhD, have received a $346,749 National Science Foundation grant to continue helping engineering programs across the country transform and improve engineering education. The grant is part of an approximately $700,000 collaborative award shared with the University of Washington’s Center for Evaluation & Research for STEM Equity and supports institutions participating in the NSF’s Revolutionizing Engineering Departments program.

Andrijcic, principal investigator, and Mohan, co-principal investigator, will continue their work on the Revolutionizing Engineering Departments Participatory Action Research (REDPAR) project, an initiative that has supported engineering education change efforts nationwide since 2015. Both researchers have been involved with the project since 2018, and this award represents their third NSF grant supporting this work.

The project strengthens the capacity of engineering faculty and staff to lead meaningful and lasting departmental change through professional development, mentoring, networking, and research-based resources. Through REDPAR, the Rose-Hulman team has collaborated with 40 colleges and universities across the country that are working to reimagine how engineering is taught and how students are supported.

"Transforming engineering education requires more than innovative ideas. It requires sustained support, strong communities, and effective strategies for organizational change," Andrijcic said. "This funding allows us to build on more than a decade of national efforts and continue helping engineering educators create learning environments that better serve all students." 

The project also examines how engineering departments successfully implement and sustain transformational change. Findings and resources developed through the project will be shared broadly through publications, educational materials, digital resources, videos, and other publicly accessible formats.

Since 2020, NSF has invested more than $870,000 in Rose-Hulman's REDPAR-related work (and over $1.2 million since 2015), recognizing the college's leadership in advancing systemic improvements in engineering education and supporting a nationwide community of change leaders. 

The project is jointly funded by the NSF Engineering Directorate's Engineering Education and Centers Division and the STEM Education Directorate's Improving Undergraduate STEM Education program.
