YouTube Edu: educational videos that connect schools to the digital world

The expansion of YouTube Edu has gone beyond the organization of educational content. The initiative has also invested in teacher professional development to support the pedagogical use of video-based resources. Between 2023 and 2025, more than 670 teachers, school leaders and education professionals participated in workshops, courses and training activities delivered in partnership with public education networks, educational institutions and UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASPnet) institutions.

In 2025, the YouTube Edu for Teachers course was launched, comprising seven video lessons that present strategies for integrating content into lesson planning, implementing active learning methodologies and making effective use of the resources available on the channel. The course was also made available in a Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) version.

The project further provides a Teacher’s Guide and a technical document linking videos to the competencies and knowledge objects defined by Brazil’s National Common Core Curriculum (BNCC), facilitating the integration of these resources into teaching practice. This approach reinforces a central principle advocated by UNESCO: educational technology delivers the greatest benefits when it strengthens the role of teachers.

Videos expand possibilities, diversify instructional strategies and enrich classroom experiences. However, it is teachers who guide learning objectives, contextualize content and lead the educational process.

Teachers who educate beyond the classroom

As YouTube Edu established itself as a leading reference for educational content, a new generation of educators emerged, capable of translating knowledge into audiovisual formats and bringing schools closer to the digital spaces where students increasingly engage and learn. To recognize this work, UNESCO and YouTube created the YouTube Digital Education Award, which honours content creators whose videos form part of the YouTube Edu collection.

The award combines technical and pedagogical evaluation with public voting, recognizing both the quality of the educational materials produced and their impact on audiences. In its first edition, held in 2023, the initiative mobilized more than 28,000 voters and recognized projects such as Centro de Mídias do Amazonas, Politize!, Professor Noslen, Mais Ciências and Aprendi Lá.

The second edition, held in 2025, significantly expanded public participation, attracting more than 80,000 votes. Among the winners was Magno Solari, recognized in the category for channels with up to 100,000 subscribers. Other award recipients included Prof. JeanGrafia | GabaritaGeo, Manual do Mundo and Português com Letícia, in different categories.

The third edition, held in 2026, continued this trajectory of growth. The winners were Márcio Lima do Nascimento, creator of the @ProfessorKraus channel, in the category for channels with up to 100,000 subscribers; Caroline Mendonça da Cunha, creator of @PortuguesParaDesesperados, in the category for channels with between 100,000 and 1 million subscribers; and Sandro Gomes da Fonseca, creator of @sandrocuriodicasdemat, in the category for channels with more than 1 million subscribers. The 2026 edition also introduced a new Women in STEM category, won by @ProfessoraNattane, highlighting the importance of promoting women’s participation and leadership in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
