NEW: Costly Kelly’s Property-Tax-Hiking School Voucher Scheme Will Cost Granite Staters More than $60 Million This Year

new report shows Costly Kelly’s school voucher scheme could cost taxpayers more than $60 million this year alone. The program, which continues to blow past its previous enrollment cap, will force taxpayers to spend an average of $4,800 per student subsidizing private school tuition for wealthy families.

Kelly Ayotte and New Hampshire Republicans have refused to adequately fund public schools and, as a result, have left schools and teachers to deal with the strain of underfunding. On average, taxpayers spend nearly $5,000 per year helping fund private school education for each student enrolled in the voucher program. Meanwhile, the state provides just over $3,000 for a child attending a public school.

In June, Ayotte doubled down on spending for her school voucher scheme after she signed a bill allowing voucher recipients to double dip by taking public school classes at no additional cost while still receiving upwards of $5,000 for private school education. Costly Kelly’s disastrous school voucher scheme has left families across the state with some of the highest property taxes in the nation

“Back-to-school season shouldn’t mean taxpayers are back on the hook for Kelly Ayotte’s school voucher scheme,” said NHDP spokesperson Marissa Hebert. “Public schools and teachers are scraping by while Ayotte bankrolls private school education for wealthy families. Bottom line: Costly Kelly is turning her back on New Hampshire’s students and driving up your property taxes.”
